Profile

Matthew Greensmith

Matthew Greensmith is the Vice President and Website Manager of the Waverley Little Athletics Centre Inc. He has been involved at the Centre for 3 years and has been a member of the Committee for 2 years.

From 2018/20, Matt volunteered out on the track as the recording tent assistant, learning the ropes, setting up the equipment and scanning athletes barcodes as they finish each race. Matt was also recruited as a starter to fill in when required.

This season, Matt joined the Committee and is responsible for looking after our website. He is also our Recording Tent Manager, responsible for looking after and setting up the barcode scanning laptop and equipment. Matt charges the timing boxes and looks after the maintenance of our equipment, such as changing batteries, updating the laptops and fixing any issues that come up. He also looks after the E-guns and speaker boxes, is a Starter and assists with early set up and pack up, primarily of the timing gates, tents and starting equipment. Matt has also assisted with some line marking duties in the second half of the 2020/21 season.

At the 2022 AGM, Matt took over as Vice President.

Life Membership Nomination 2025/26:

Matt and his sons, David and Adrian, first joined Waverley Little Athletics Centre in 2018/19.

Matt is another one of those parents who quickly put his hand up to help out with the running of the program at our weekly sessions on Saturday mornings.

He started assisting in the Track Timing/Recording Tents and then from Season 2019/20, he was one of our starters. In Season 2020/21, Matt really stepped up. He joined the committee as the Website/Computer Manager. This involved being responsible for looking after our website. He was also our Recording Tent Manager, looking after and setting up the barcode scanning laptop and equipment. Matt charged the timing boxes and looked after the maintenance of our equipment, such as changing batteries, updating the laptops and fixing any issues that come up. He also looked after the E-guns and speaker boxes, and assisted with early set up and pack up, primarily of the timing gates, tents and starting equipment. Matt has also assisted with some line marking duties from the second half of the 2020/21 season to present.

In Season 2022/23, Matt added to his duties, the Vice-President’s role and also the equipment manager role, keeping an eye on our equipment and doing the equipment stocktake.

In Season 2022/23, the centre updated the Timing Gates, as the Old “Tassie” gates were starting to fail, the frame was bulky to put up and hardware support was not available anymore. Matt undertook the task of liasing and purchasing the Timing Gates from Timing Solutions. He learnt how the gates work, made sure the batteries were charged, especially at the start of each new Season, learned how to use the software, determined the new procedure of running the races and allocating results to the athletes. Then how to upload the results into ResultsHQ and then our website.

The other new task Matt has undertaken is allocating the handicaps to our athletes, for the WaverleyLAC Gift. This event was first introduced in Season 2023/24, exposing our athletes to handicap running and giving all the athletes a sporting chance to win the trophy for each Age Group, regardless of ability or gender.

In the current Season 2025/26, Matt has stepped back, being a General Committee member, as his sons either aged out or moved on. But Matt is still contributing to the season by attending committee meetings, and helping out most Saturday mornings with teaching the next generation of parents how to set up the Timing Gates and trouble shooting any issues. This willingness to still be involved, attend the Saturday morning sessions, mentor new committee members shows Matt’s generosity and commitment.

Over the last eight years, Matt has made many positive contributions to our centre, in lots of different areas, to keep our centre going and give the kids a fantastic athletics experience. The requirements for Life Membership, as stipulated in the Centre’s Life Membership Policy, have well and truly been covered by Matthew Greensmith and he is a worthy recipient.
