Cross Country Calenar 2021 (Updated 31/03/2021)

Little Athletics

Little Athletics is a Centre based Track & Field competition for children aged between 5 and 15.  For more details check out What is Little Athletics?

Waverley Little Athletics Centre is based at Central Reserve Athletics Track in Glen Waverley, is affiliated with Little Athetics Victoria and is part of the Southern Metropolitan Region (SMR). Not near Glen Waverley? Find your nearest Centre.

Because Little Athletics is a totally voluntary organisation, the Centre cannot operate without the assistance of parents each week in fulfilling the many and varied duties required. These include officiating at an event; managing an age group; recording results; working in the canteen; to name just a few. Additional assistance is always required on the Centre committees and all parents are encouraged to become involved. Little Athletics is one of the few sports where parents can become fully involved in their child's sporting interests.

08/04/2021 - Vale Merle McBean

Vale Merle McBean... a tribute to your wonderful life ❤️

It’s with great sadness to inform you that Merle McBean passed away late on Tuesday evening, 6th April 2021.

I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Sharon McBean, her family and friends during this unfortunate time - we are thinking of you all.

Some of you may have known Merle through your connection with SMR or LAVic, or when she assisted at Waverley when I was President back in the early 2010’s.

Merle was a stalwart of Little Athletics. Her journey began at the Springvale Little Athletics Centre in the 1970’s where she remained an active volunteer into the mid 2010’s. She was awarded Life Membership of the two clubs she was part of that made up Springvale LAC, was a Springvale LAC Committee Member for 30+ years and was awarded Life Membership in 1983/84. Her involvement at Springvale went above and beyond that of any other volunteer I have ever met. She spent most of her life living and breathing Little Athletics at Springvale, serving on the Committee, running discus, managing the canteen, organising and running school bookings and even cleaning the toilets and bathrooms.

Merle was a member of the SMR Committee and was a Key Official from the 1980’s through to the early 2010’s. Her involvement included SMR Organising Secretary, Acting Secretary, Secretary, Education Coordinator and Assistant Education Coordinator. She was probably best known for her involvement in organising the SMR carnivals, Communications Manager or Discus Manager.  She was also a member of the LAVic Membership/Public Relations Committees, a member of the Merchandise team, a Key Official at State Championships and various other LAVic events such as they Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal and much more. For her exemplary services to Little Athletics she was awarded Life Governor in 2001/02.

This loss is very personal to me and I am heartbroken to say the least. Merle and I became friends through our association at SMR. When I joined the SMR team as a Key Official and later as an SMR Committee Member, Merle offered to pick me up and drive me to and from various meetings or competition events as I did not drive. Merle also came from Springvale LAC which is the Centre my grandparents were associated with from 1986/78. We had an instant connection. We became close friends, practically family, I used to refer to Merle as my “second Nanna”. Our association grew closer when I started volunteering at Springvale on a Friday night for a couple of years as a favour to Merle and a few others there and Merle returned that favour by assisting me personally during my first term as President at Waverley. She would come down and help run our relaython event and was Discus Manager at our Open Days.

To Merle, may you forever Rest In Peace, look down on all your friends and family from Little Athletics and hopefully you’ve met up with my Pop, with whom you’d have been great friends. Lots of love, Dylan.

Cross Country Calenar 2021 (Updated 31/03/2021)

31/03/2021 - Trophy pick up / Cross Country

Dear Waverley families,

Thanks to all those who came to our presentation night on Sat 20th March – I hope you all had a great time.

For those who could not make it, I will be at the clubrooms on Thursday afternoon from 4pm – 5pm, for trophy pick up. All athletes receive a trophy and certificate. Or please contact me for alternative arrangements or pick up them up when we start back towards the end of the year.

Finally Cross Country Information:

For those interested, the cross country season starts Sat 17th April at Koomba Park, 9 am. We participate in the program organized by Knox Little Aths Centre. SherbrookeLAC also joins in and little athletes from other centres may appear. Your registration fee covers cross country as well.

We need a cross country coordinator – to liase with Knox Little Aths centre, be a contact for our athletes at the Sat morning cross country runs, promote and be team manager at region (we are in Southern Metro Region) and state cross country events.

I have attached the cross country dates and locations. More information on the KnoxLAC website: http://klac23.org.au/wordpress/?page_id=80

The races start at 9 am sharp, each week the age group who starts changes. U6 races are always in the middle.

Distances: U6 500m, U7 & U8 1000m, U9 & U10 1500m, U11 & U12 2000m, U13 to U16 3000m. Each race has two age groups and boys and girls run together. Occasionally there is a parent's race !!

Bring spare clothes if wet.

When you first arrive, check in at the Waverley flag or go straight to the start of the race when called. There is NO need to go to the Knox registration tent. Make sure you wear your registration patches. Temporary patches can be obtained from us at the Waverley flag.

There are adult runners from Knox who are hares – run in front of the kids and tortoises – who run behind to make sure kids are not left behind. So our athletes are well looked after during the races. Parents cheer from the sidelines. Also compulsory to run in your age group.

Each family is required to do one duty during the cross country season for the morning. Knox cross country committee members are the ones getting up early in the cold wet mornings to set up the courses for us, and we need to do our one duty each week.

Finally if you would like to be included in the weekly cross country email, please let me know, so I can include you on the list.

Let me know if you have any queries.

Thanks

Katy

Cross Country Calenar 2021 (Updated 31/03/2021)

30/03/2021 - REPORT ON 2021 LAVic STATE RELAYS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to our 36 'WLAC' Little Athletes who came together to form our relay teams for the 'Little Athletics Victoria' State Relays Championships, that were held on the weekend of the 27th to the 28th of March, 2021 at Casey Fields Regional Athletics Centre.

All of our relay runners had a great time both on and off the track....gaining valuable competition experience, successfully piloting the baton safely around the lap, cheering on and congratulating their fellow Waverley LAC team mates, meeting new friends from other centres and regions, whilst also running to the very best of their abilities in some very trying conditions.

Thank-you firstly to all of our 'WLAC' Little Athletes who competed in the State Relays, particularly those who were asked to run up an age group to ensure that all of our registered runners were able to compete in at least one event at the state titles. Special thanks also to Olive (Caulfield) and Sabine (Brighton) who joined our U10 Mixed 'B' and U10 Girls 4x100m Relay Teams respectively, to form a combined SMR squad.

We had some fantastic results across both days of the State Relays Championships, with many team PB's smashed and all batons safely passed between our relay runners. Our 'WLAC' relay teams achieved the following results -

U9 Girls 4x100m Relay - 22nd
U9 Boys 4x100m Relay - 29th
U9 Mixed 4x100m Relay 'A' - 32nd
U9 Mixed 4x100m Relay 'B' - 45th
U10 Girls 4x100m Relay 'SMR' - 21st
U10 Boys 4x100m Relay - 4th
U10 Mixed 4x100m Relay 'A' - 5th
U10 Mixed 4x100m Relay 'SMR' 'B' - 44th
U11 Boys 4x100m Relay - 5th
U12 Boys 4x100m Relay - 29th
U13 Girls 4x100m Relay - 10th
U13 Boys 4x100m Relay - 14th
U13 Mixed 4x100m Relay 'A' - 19th
U13 Mixed 4x100m Relay 'B' - 28th
U15 Boys 4x100m Relay - 11th

All of our athletes and teams should be very proud of their achievements, it's not every year that we have 15 teams making it through to States! You all ran so well and represented our centre with aplomb.

Thank-you to Katy our Team Manager who led our 'WLAC' Relay Team across both days of the championships, your dedication to our centre is second to none Katy and we all really appreciate everything that you do for our Little Athletes and their families. Thanks also to all of our Age Group Relay Coordinators and Coaches (Cara, Luke, Nicole, Aslam, Jess, Merryn, Leigh, Louise, Melonie, Jonathan, Brett, Angela & Holly) who continually supported our Little Athletes both at training and also at the State Relay Championships, you are all too good!

We would also like to sincerely thank the following 'WLAC' families who kindly filled our required Centre Duties as Track Umpires at the LAVic State Relays Championships - Mallawa Arachchige family, Ross family, Hendro family, Siega family, Beasley family, Czosnek family, Harris family, Dobson family, Robinson family, Mullner family, Cooke family and the Ong family.

To all of our other 'WLAC' families, who helped out on and off the track this relay season, we also thank-you for your time and efforts! Special mentions to the Cooke family who set-up our 'WLAC' tents on the Friday evening before the State Relays Championships; the Dobson and Mullner families who assisted to secure our 'WLAC' tents in the windy conditions on the Saturday afternoon; as well as the Ashcroft, Cooke, Greensmith and Shalders families who helped out with packing up our 'WLAC' tents and equipment at the conclusion of the carnival. Finally, we would like to thank Little Athletics Victoria for organising and running the event, along with all of the competition sponsors including the Commonwealth Bank.

Can't wait for the next relay season to come around once again, just like the baton in lane one of a 4x100m relay...... but let's all enjoy our relatively 'free' weekends for a little while....May you all have a great day, take care and stay healthy!

#GoTeamWaverley!

Kind Regards,

Mr Mark Robinson

25/03/2021 - Wrap up from AGM last weekend

Dear WLAC Members,

I would like to convey a huge thank you to everyone that attended our Annual General Meeting and Presentation Night last Saturday, 20th March. Your show of support is very much appreciated and it made for a great weekend.

Thank you to the outgoing 2020/21 Committee for your services over the past 12 months. Congratulations on a successful season.

Several new members stepped up at the AGM and joined the Committee. Thank you for your support in running the Centre and ensuring our future success. There is now a good mixture of old and new faces on the Committee. Introducing your new Committee below:

2021/22 Committee

Position Person
President Dylan Cooper
Vice President Caitlin Brusco
Secretary Timo Brouwer
Treasurer Shirley Desa
Registrar Neetasha Dobson
Arena Manager Vacant
Equipment Manager Bryan Milne
Coaching Manager Katy Smith
Website Manager Matthew Greensmith
Results Manager Penny Siega
Centre Mentor Caitlin Brusco
Publicity Manager Vacant
General Committee Peter McCusker
General Committee Derek Kums

As you can see, we managed to fill most Committee Positions at the AGM, after 2-3 rounds of calling for nominations from the floor. Special thanks to everyone that spoke at the meeting, including Matt Fregon MP, in an effort to encourage members to join the Committee.

As you can also see, there are two positions that remain vacant that we need to fill. There are several other positions that we can consider adding to the Committee as required if anyone is interested and we will also appoint any other parents that would be interested in joining as a General Committee Member. Joining the Committee does not require much effort, it does not take up too much of your time, we try to have a Committee Meeting once a month, keep in touch via email and throughout the winter it's very quiet. Being part of our Committee is a very rewarding experience, you contribute to running a voluntary organisation and make a lot of new life long friends. Many hands make light work and heading into the 2021/22 season, we need all hands on deck.

If anyone is interested in becoming a Committee Member, please contact me directly.

Finally, Cross Country is coming up very soon - more information will be sent out as soon as possible, in the meantime keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for information.

Kind Regards,

Dylan Cooper

25/03/2021 - More Information In Relation To The LAVic State Relays Championships

Email from Mark Robinson - 24/03/2021

Good Evening 'WLAC' State Relays Families,
Another great training session for our 'WLAC' Relay Teams in chilly conditions this afternoon! All of our runners are looking quick and it is so good to see how much their baton changes and leading/calling has improved, you should all be very proud of your Little Athletes who are doing an amazing job and are certain to represent themselves, their families and our centre with great pride this weekend at the LAVic State Relays Championships.......
Please find attached to this email the following 'updated' and 'important' information in relation to the LAVic State Relays Championships -

1.) Parent Roster for our Centre Duties at the LAVic State Relays Championships. Please check this attached document carefully to see what time your family has been rostered on for duty (please try to arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of your duty, so you can swap over with the previous duty parent and they can show you what you need to do) and also ensure that you speak with Katy on Saturday to see where your duty is stationed and what you have to do.

2.) Casey Fields Athletics Track Venue Map. Katy will be setting up our team tents near entrance two, just near the First Aid, with a prime view of the Start / Finish line. Thanks to Katy for transporting our tents out to Casey Fields on Saturday morning and setting them up from 8am. If there are any early birds who would like to give Katy a hand setting up our 'WLAC' Tent City from 8am on Saturday morning, it would be greatly appreciated.

3.) Updated Timetables for both Saturday and Sunday of the LAVic State Relays Championships. Please see new times for marshaling and events in the attached timetables. We are still waiting on LAVic to send us through the finalised athlete summary with the timed final no. / lane no. and call room time for our teams. As soon as this information is sent through to Katy and I, we will pass it onto all of our 'WLAC' Relay Families.

4.) Updated 'WLAC' Relay Teams for LAVic State Relays Championships. Please note that we have had some last minute changes to our Relay Team in the U13 Boys 4x100m event - Massive thank-you to Michael Skantzos and his Mum Jo for confirming that Michael can run on Sunday at such short notice, we really appreciate you doing this for our centre Michael and Jo!

5.) UPDATE on U10 Mixed 4x100m Relay Team #2 - We are still waiting to see if any other Little Aths Centres in the SMR have an U10 Girl who is able to run in this event with Ruby, Alexander and Jack. Katy has again reached out to all of the SMR LAC's to see if they have any available runners who can fill this fourth and final spot in our Mixed team. This team is still registered for their event on Saturday, as we will wait and see if another girl is available to run with our 'WLAC' little athletes up until this date. We have up until 60 minutes before the event to scratch our team if we are unable to find another runner, but we will keep all of our parents/guardians in this age group posted on any developments. Fingers crossed another centre can help us out here.....

As always, if anyone has any questions in relation to this weekend's State Relay Championships, please feel free to send me an email or text/call on 0411702377........& don't forget to keep an eye out for further emails over the next couple of days with more details on State Relays as they are released by LAVic.....

Take care, hope you all have a terrific Thursday!

Kind Regards,

Mr Mark Robinson
Relays Coordinator & Team Manager
