Summer Season 2026/27 Relay Competitions

News - 2026/2027

Hi Waverley Families,

Relay season is almost here, and we’re excited to give our athletes another opportunity to represent Waverley, compete with their friends and experience the fun of team athletics!

Relays are always a highlight of the season. They bring a different dimension to athletics, where teamwork, encouragement and getting those baton changes right are just as important as speed. Whether your child is a seasoned competitor or trying relays for the first time, it’s a fantastic way to build confidence, make friendships and be part of a team.

WHAT ARE RELAYS?

In a relay, athletes work together as a team, with each runner completing a section of the race and passing a baton to the next runner. Each team member plays an important role, and success comes from supporting one another, practising together and working as a team.

Relays are great for developing sprinting skills, baton-change technique, confidence, sportsmanship and team spirit. Most importantly, they’re a lot of fun!

WHAT EVENTS ARE AVAILABLE?

Waverley participates in three relay competitions during the summer season:

1. Mentone Relay Day – Sunday 15 November 2026

Venue: Dolamore Reserve, Parkdale.

Mentone Relay Day is a fun, welcoming introduction to competitive relays and a great opportunity for athletes to experience racing as part of a team.

Depending on the event, teams can be girls, boys or mixed. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the excitement of relays in a supportive environment.

2. Southern Metro Region Relay Carnival – Saturday 21 November 2026

Venue: Frankston Little Athletics Centre, Frankston.

The Region Relay Carnival is for U9–U17 athletes and brings together athletes from centres across the Southern Metro Region (SMR).

This carnival is an exciting opportunity to compete against other centres, represent Waverley and work towards qualifying for the State Relay Championships.

There are also Multi-Class relay events for eligible athletes.

3. State Relay Championships – Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December 2026

The State Relay Championships are the next step for successful teams.

How does qualification work?

The State Championships are split across the weekend, with U9–U12 and Multi-Class events on Saturday 12 December, and U13–U17 events on Sunday 13 December.

Venue: Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park
