Box Hill Relays Day 2021

News - 2020/2021

Box Hill LAC Relays Day - Sunday the 21st of February, 2021.....

On Sunday the 21st of February, 23 'WLAC' Relay Teams competed in the Box Hill LAC Relays Day at the Box Hill Athletics Track, Hagenaur Reserve. We would firstly like to thank the Box Hill LAC for organising and running this event in very trying times, it was so great to see all of our 'WLAC' athletes back out on the track at a major relay carnival representing our Centre with pride, confidence and distinction.

Twenty of our 'WLAC' relay teams (formed by 34 athletes - a nice nod to our Little Ath's centre number) actually qualified for and ran in finals at the Box Hill Relays Day, which is our best relay team effort for a very long time - #GoWaverley!
Of particular note, our 'WLAC' team bookends were firing on all cylinders in the morning and late in the afternoon.....with our U/9 Girls and U/9 Boys teams safely guiding the baton around the track in each and every one of their events at their very first Relay Carnival! Very impressive work from our youngest relay squad members.....whilst our U/15 Boys team made it a clean sweep with three gold batons from three events, earning themselves the rightful name of the 'Golden Oldies'!

We were also particularly impressed with the willingness of many of our athletes to run up in teams, either one or two age groups older than their own when required, ensuring that all of our teams were ready and set on track for the sound of the starter's pistol. Thank-you to all of our amazing athletes who went above and beyond whilst doing so at the Box Hill Relays Day!
All of our athletes also did a great job cheering on their fellow 'WLAC' team members, encouraging them all to do their very best! Most importantly, all of our 'WLAC' athletes had a lot of fun both on and off the track, all the time respecting one another, their competitors, all supporters and the officials on and around the track! So good to see how well behaved all of our athletes were and also how well they all got on! This team has a very special vibe surrounding it, thanks to our incredible 'WLAC' athletes!
A giant thank-you to our 'WLAC' Team Manager Katy and all of our Age Group Relay Coordinators too, who all made sure that our athletes were well hydrated, warmed up, calm and ready to race in each of their events....we really appreciate you volunteering in these important roles and thank-you all for the work that you put in both during and also in the lead up to this event.
Thanks also to all of our 'WLAC' families who provided a chorus of support for our teams throughout the day, you could 'relay' see how much our relay runners 'relay' appreciated your cheering (sorry, couldn't help myself, had to slip in a couple of 'relay' bad relay puns....maybe a trio!). Thank-you as well to all of our 'WLAC' families who were able to help with setting up our tent city, in addition to those who assisted us to pack up all of our 'WLAC' equipment at the end of the relay events.....so great to see so many hands making light work of these duties!
Finally, kudos to the following relay teams on taking home gold, silver or bronze batons for their outstanding relay efforts at the 2021 Box Hill Relays Day -

1st - U/11 Boys 4 x 100m Relay
