The Waverley Little Athletics series got a flying start on Saturday.

After the first day Mt. Waverley have taken the overall lead in the progressive points competition. 

Progressive points scores are: Essex Heights 31,070 (Girls, 9200; boys 21,870), Glen Heights 25,699 (11,497; 14,202), Glen Waverley 33,569 (11,272; 22,295), Holy Family 38,668 (13,318; 25,350), Mt. Waverley 46,901 (18,415; 28,486), Panther 29,711 (4480; 25,231), St. Christopher's 39,520 (14,418; 25,102), St. Leonard's 39,168 (18,164; 21,004), Syndal 33,464 (13,160; 20,304), Syndal North 22,992 (6231; 16,761), Syndal South 43,292 (18,113; 25,179), Waverley North 23,060 (6247; 16, 813).

Three lads caught the eye in the 100 metres sprint. Under 8 boy J. Donaldson won his race by 8 yards for Syndal in 16.2 sec.

In the under 9s, R. Croxford (Syndal North) clocked 15.5 and B. Wickham (Mt. Waverley) gave the best performance of the day to clock 14.6 in the under 10. The win was worth 959 pts. for his club. 

Another good performance came in long jump where D. Rigby cleared 3.56 metres for Waverley North in the under 9 group. 

1700 POINTS

The outstanding effort among girls came from R. Callander in the under 12 group. 

She won every event in which she participated and collected 1700 points for Syndal South. 

Other good performances were:

GIRLS

Under 8, R. McFeeters, Syndal, who tied in the hundred metres and won High Jump. 

Under 10, P. Jones of Mt. Waverley who tied the 60 m. hurdles and won the shot put. 

Under 11, S. McDonald of Syndal South who won both 100 metre and discus. 

BOYS

Under 11, N. Koop, Syndal South, who tied the 100 metres and won high jump. 

P. McHugh, also Syndal South, who won the shot put and discus. His discus throw was the day's best at 24.28 metres.

3 TROPHIES

Most competitions are in the under 8 and 9 groups and Little Athletics officials would like to see more competitors in the older age groups. 

Parents wishing to enrol their children could ring Mr. Brian Harvey at 560 9693 or Mr. Terry Humphris at 277 9125. 

Three trophies will be awarded this season - one for total girls' points, one for total boys' points and a combined club trophy.
