Little Athletics Centre Formed

News - 1968/1969

Waverley Gazette Newspaper - Wednesday 20th November 1968 - Page 3

More than 300 parents last week turned out to a meeting in the Presbyterian Hall, Glen Waverley, to form the 35th Little Athletics Centre in Victoria.

Thirteen area clubs were formed and it is expected that almost 900 boys and girls, between the ages of 8 and 12 years, will be registered at the Centre.

The organisers of the sport in Victoria, Mr. Trevor Billingham (the originator) and Mr. A Triscott, addressed the meeting and said the interest displayed ensured the success of a local centre.

The enthusiasm to form clubs at the meeting was the result of the senior athletics club previously sending 5,000 circulars to schools in the district.

The clubs formed were from Bayview, Essex Heights, Glen Waverley, Glen Waverley Heights, Mt. Waverley, Pinewood/Notting Hill, Syndal, Syndal North, Syndal South, Mulgrave/Wellington, Holy Family (Mt. Waverley), St. Christophers (Syndal) and St. Leonards, with a possibility of at least two more.

TRACK AVAILABLE

The Waverley Council has granted the new centre the use of the temporary athletic field with all facilities at the rear of the main oval in Central Reserve, Springvale Rd.

A full all-weather track will be built in the near future at the Reserve.

Waverley Amateur Athletic Club coach Mr. Laurie Denton, secretary Mr. Alan Douglas and chairman Mr. Wal. Robinson have already put in many hours' preparatory work for the centre.

Two representatives of each club will meet at the Presbyterian Church Hall supper room this Thursday to form the centre executive and, after clubs have elected office-bearers, it is hoped to get the competition started early in December.

Little Athletics originated at Geelong only two years ago and now 350 clubs are affiliated with the various centres, each of which has an average weekly attendance of 500 children.

Other centres have recently been formed at Knox, Box Hill, and Nunawading, and next Saturday will be the opening day of the Springvale Centre at the Ross Reserve, Corrigan Rd., Noble Park, at 9:30 a.m.
