2015 State Track and Field Championships

News - 2014/2015

Well the Championships have come and gone again! In what was superb weather over the weekend, a small number of athletes represented the club. What they did was amazing, with many personal bests being achieved, which is mostly what it is really all about. I was certainly proud of their efforts and was pleased to see the small team sit together and bond over the weekend. One of the highlights was our team marching on the Saturday.

We came away with 4 medals, with a few close 4ths and 5ths too!!

Notable performances were as follows (in no particular order!)
  • Spencer Storan - this little man can really run and capped off his great weekend (running the 200m, 400m, 800m and fighting a stitch in the 1100m walk!) with a silver in the Boys U9 400m - great effort Spencer!
  • Jessica Hepworth - although finishing a close 4th in the 800m on Saturday, Jess went one better on Sunday winning the Bronze in the Girls U15 1500m - gutsy performance Jess!
  • Caeden Parkinson - in the U10 Boys Caeden was the club's hurdle gun for the weekend. Caeden won Bronze in the 80m hurdles in a hotly contested race, and was unlucky not to repeat that on Sunday in the 60m hurdles, finishing a close 5th. A real professional approach to your racing Caeden!
  • Cameron Miranda - competed in both the Discus and Shot Put, winning a Silver in the Shot Put. A real quiet achiever is our Cameron, holding a few club records in the throws. Well done again Cameron!
  • Sarah Morley - Sarah threw a massive 5 metre PB in the girls U13 Javelin, narrowly missing out on a medal in the process, finishing 4th. A great weekend's competition for you Sarah.

Next year's event will clash with the Australian F1 Grand Prix, so I dare say it will be held elsewhere. I would encourage as many athletes to enter an event or two at Regionals as it is a great experience for the kids and they get to meet many people from Waverley/ other clubs and form friendships as well as healthy competition!

Finally, thank you to Dylan and the many parents who volunteered their time to officiate over the weekend - it is much appreciated.

I will arrange to have the website updated with the photos taken of the weekend. Also, performance cards that have not been received will be mailed to the athletes.

See you all next season, and keep fit over winter.

Best regards

Team Manager

From Margaret Hay - Charlotte also had a huge PB taking a whopping 22 seconds off her under 11 Waverley Record, while competing in a cast due fracturing her arm earlier in the week.
