News - 2010/2011
The cross country season commenced last Saturday 10th April 2010 at Koomba Park in conjunction with Knox LAC.
WLAC has 51 registered cross country athletes ranging from U6 to U15. Despite the first week of the season being during the school holidays, WLAC had over 20 athletes compete.
A special welcome to Sophie and Laura who recently joined WLAC. I hope you have a rewarding season.
Our first day of competition was a little damp underfoot but stayed clear for the duration of the programme. The first week of competition is always a little hectic with administration activities, but otherwise it was a smooth and successful day. Special thanks to Paul Hanlon, Darrin Stephens and Tracey Kennedy for helping me with administrative duties on the day.
Although I didn't get to see many of the events last Saturday, I was fortunate to see the end of the Under 6 race back on a video camera! The strategic move of the day definitely goes to WLAC's very own Charlie who weaved in and out of the witches hats that were lined up at the end of the race ... just as the 'hare with the crazy hair' had done! Despite the chicanes, Charlie still managed to finish first across the line! Magic moment!
As you are aware, WLAC parents are required to complete at least 1 duty session during the season. Knox puts in a lot of time and effort organising the programme and they are busy with early morning and late morning setting up / packing up of the course as well as managing its operation during the day. In order to assist Knox, WLAC provides at least 2 parents for duty each week.
Many thanks to Tammy Stephens and Stephanie Thomas for being track marshals at Koomba.
Next week (17th) the Burns and Debicki families are on duty from 9 am until the finish of the programme. Please report to David (who has the mircrophone) to be allocated your duty for the day.
Results for the first week of competition will eventually be available on the Knox website as will the photos taken by the Knox photographers.
Cross country training begins this Wednesday 14th April at Central Reserve (meet at the club rooms), from 5 - 6 pm (u9-u15only). Jake will be taking the sessions and there is no charge for WLAC athletes. These sessions are available for athletes aged U9 - U15 (no younger please) Come along and improve your fitness for competition days.
Please note that changes have been made to the venues for the season. Please check the updated calendar on the WLAC website.
Week 2 on Saturday 17th April will be held at Jells Park South (Ferntree Gully Road entrance), Melways reference 72 B9.
The competition commences at 9 am sharp.
The order of events will be:
- U13 - 15 3000 m
- U7 & U8 1000 m
- U6 500 m
- U11 & U12 2000 m
